Can gene editing really future-proof chocolate?

Chocolate is in trouble – or at least that is increasingly the story being told.

Climate change, crop disease and volatile cocoa prices have produced a steady stream of headlines warning that the future of chocolate is under threat. And into that anxiety has come an increasingly familiar technological promise: gene editing can create a cacao tree tough enough to survive whatever comes next.

The latest Beyond the Headline briefing from Beyond GM takes a closer look at that claim – and finds a significant gap between the headlines and the science.

Confectionery giant Mars has been working with researchers linked to the Innovative Genomics Institute at UC Berkeley and, more recently, gene-editing company Pairwise. In 2025 Mars licensed Pairwise’s CRISPR platform for cacao research, part of an effort to develop crops that are higher-yielding and more resistant to disease and climate stresses.

The language surrounding the work is ambitious. Mars has talked about “future-proofing” chocolate, while trade coverage has presented gene editing as a potential solution to the threats facing cocoa production.

But how far has the science actually got?

Researchers have successfully edited a cacao gene associated with resistance to Phytophthora, one of the pathogens responsible for black pod disease. More recent work has produced whole edited cacao plants showing stronger immune responses and smaller disease lesions. That is a genuine scientific advance.

It is not, however, a commercially ready, climate-proof cacao tree. The plants remain experimental and long-term field trials are still needed to establish whether the disease resistance holds up under real farming conditions. There is currently no commercially grown gene-edited cacao variety and no public evidence that an edited trait has yet performed reliably in the field over time.

Clarity matters because the crisis facing cacao is much bigger than a plant genome.

Millions of cocoa farmers remain poor. Plantations are ageing, soils are degraded and production is often concentrated in vulnerable monocultures. Climate change and disease add to those pressures, but they do not create them. A gene edit might make a tree more resistant to a particular pathogen; it cannot raise farmgate prices, restore depleted soils or alter the economics of the cocoa trade.

The briefing also raises another largely overlooked question: if a “future-proof” cacao tree is eventually produced, who will own it? The terms of the Mars–Pairwise agreement, including ownership of any resulting cacao traits and the conditions under which farmers might gain access to them, have not been made public.

That gets to the heart of this latest Beyond the Headline analysis.

The question is not whether gene editing might contribute something useful to cacao breeding. It might. The question is what happens when one experimental intervention is turned into a rescue narrative for a crisis rooted in economics, ecology and power.

Before we talk about future-proofing chocolate, we need to ask a more fundamental question: whose future are we trying to protect?
